Good thing, Shadoe thought later as she stared at the heaping plate of food Benjamin had slid under her nose. She wouldn’t have been able to fight this anyway, not now. Not yet. She was weak, tired, exhaustion permeating every inch of her being.

And still…as she watched him return to the stove to toss fluffy eggs, golden brown biscuits and crispy bacon onto his own plate, she wanted him. Still. His tight, perfect butt in his snug jeans caught her eye, and she had to clench her nails into her palms to keep from reaching out and grabbing him.

Welcome, little sister…

Shadoe jerked, her fork falling unnoticed to the floor.

A voice.

She heard a voice.

A soft, amused noise flooded her system, filling her, echoing around her. Like laughter…but not from a human throat.

Long have you been gone to me, the voice whispered. For a time, I knew it had to be so, but then… I missed you, and tried to call to you, but the barrier between you and me was thick. I couldn’t breach it. A powerful woman, she must have been…

Who? Shadoe wondered, her eyes wheeling around the room, looking for the one who spoke to her.

“Your mother,” Benjamin answered. Turning, he met her eyes and moved across the room, setting his plate on the table before coming to kneel beside her, taking one of her stiff, cold hands in his. Then he glanced around the room, as though searching for something. “Wolf…be nice. She’s had a rough time lately.”

That odd, chuffing sort of laughter again and then the voice came, but this time it was aloud, not just spoken within her. “Brother…am I ever not nice?” the creature asked in a purring sort of rumble.

Ben laughed. “Stop playing games, Wolf. Bad enough she has to deal with this animal you’ve unleashed running rampant within her. She doesn’t need a cocky totem making things worse,” he said.

“It is not an animal within her…it is my essence.” The voice was haughtier now, and smug. Then she sensed a sort of softening in this presence, a fondness, and something almost like an invisible hug settled over her shoulders. “My pretty, precious sister,” the being whispered lovingly. “Listen…learn…feel…”

Shadoe’s breath locked within her throat as she was pulled out of her body, and she could feel herself being flung through time and space. Then a soft grayness took her and she could think of nothing else.

Floating infinitely inside that warm gray cocoon, Shadoe felt bathed in love, warmth, acceptance. Then she felt solid again and her eyes opened. But she wasn’t in her home.

A forest, vast and ageless, surrounded her, and everything around her shimmered with life. The trees, the moss growing on the tumbled rocks—those very rocks seemed to gleam with life. And lying in front of the rocks was a massive gray wolf, his eyes deep satiny pools of silver, unlike any wolf she had ever seen or imagined.

“Welcome, sister, to the dreamscape.”

Although the wolf’s mouth didn’t move, the words came from him.
